MDA



On December 20th the Rochester Fire Fighters Association Local 1071 presented a check to the MDA in the amount of $4900. The check was from money raised in the Annual MDA Boot Drive and the Local 1071 Annual Charity Golf Tournament.  Thank you to all that made this possible.

Elections for the Two Percent Committee will be held December 12, 2012 in the Local 1071 Union Office, 1425 Mt. Read Blvd., Suite 245.  Elections will be conducted by Secret Ballot from 8:00 am – 7:00 pm. The five (5) candidates that receive the majority of the votes shall be Elected Director(s). RFD Recruit Class


Fire Chief Sam Mitrano has appointed a new class of 24 Recruits. The new recruits began 24 weeks of training at the Rochester Fire Department Training Academy on November 19, 2012. The 24 weeks of training will test the recruits strength, physically and mentally. If the recruits make it through the 24 weeks of training they will be sworn in as Firefighters in May 2013. The new recruits are: Andrew Barbetta, Thomas Berry, Cory Bradley-Phillips, Daniel Caufield,James Daniels, Jr., Mark Dey, Ryan Gardner, Jonathan Grifiths, Jamie Groff, Chaz Harris, Robert Hernandez, Joseph Horn, Michael Oberst, Marcus Patterson, Lawrence Presha, Kyle Relyea, Robert Robinson, Amy Rufo, Patrick Rutledge, Sarah Sanderson, Jason Schneeberger, Anthony Sinclair, Alexander Williams, Terrance Youmans.

Daylight Savings Time



At 2 a.m. on Sunday November 4, 2012, remember to turn your clocks an hour behind to end daylight savings time. Rochester Fire Fighters Association Local 1071 and the IAFF are urging the public to change more than just the batteries in their smoke detectors when Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend. Please upgrade your smoke detectors to make sure your home is equipped with photoelectric smoke detectors.

Toys for Tots Charity Football Game



The Rochester Fire Department, area Army, Marines, Navy and the Rochester Police Department collected toys and donations on Saturday, for the first ever Toys for Tots charity football game. Spectators were asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy or a 5 dollar donation to watch the game. In addition to the flag football game there were raffles and games. The money raised at the event will go towards the Toys for Tots program and the purchasing of toys for underprivileged children in the Rochester area.

Fire Prevention Week



The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention week is October 7-13. This year’s theme is “Have 2 Ways Out!” focusing on the importance of an escape plan. NFPA has developed a web site for Fire Prevention Week that includes a planning guide and materials. NFPA launched the Fire Prevention Week campaign 90 years ago, making it the longest-running public health and safety observance on record.

WEAR PINK



October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Rochester Fire Fighters Association Local 1071 supports the fight against breast and other cancers. Over the last several years, IAFF affiliates across North America have participated in a movement to wear pink T-shirts while on duty as part of their breast cancer awareness efforts. Again this October,  Rochester Fire Chief Mitrano has given the approval to show support of Breast Cancer Awareness and wear a pink breast cancer t-shirt while on duty.  Please see the IDC in the firehouse for more info.

RFD Promotions



The Rochester Fire Department held a Promotion Ceremony on September 24, 2012 in the Kate Gleason Auditorium at the Bausch & Lomb Building of the Central Library.

Lt. Thomas McMahon and Lt. Christine Schryver were promoted to the Rank of Captain.

Firefighter Scott Erbland, Firefighter Greg Borden and Firefighter Matt Sauers were promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant.

Congratulations to all of these members and their families.

IAFF Burn Foundation



The IAFF Burn Foundation sponsors the Annual the International Burn Camp which is held in Washington, D.C. Children, ages 13-15, who attend the International Burn Camp have also attended a regional or state burn camp. These children, along with a professional firefighter, are then nominated to attend the IAFF Burn Camp by their local burn camp.

This year IAFF Local 1071’s own Lt. Allyn Borrino, E-13 G-2, has been nominated and selected to attend the International Burn Camp by the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association. On September 22, 2012, Lt. Al Borrino will accompany one of the male juvenile burn survivors from the February 18, 2012 fatal fire at 82 Grape Street to Washington, D.C. for the weeklong camp. 

Lt. John Appleby E-3 G-2




Congratulations to Lt. John Appleby on his retirement after 28 years of Service. Lt Appleby joined the Rochester Fire Department on August 13, 1984 and was sworn in to the position of
Lieutenant on November 20, 1989. Best wishes to John and his family.  Retirement Party: 9/15/12 Noon - 8pm. Ellison Park.

Scholarship Winner


Congratulations to Richard L. Yackel for winning a $1,000. College Scholarship from the NY State Honorary Fire Chiefs Association & the NY State Professional Fire Fighters Association. The winners were announced at the 74th Annual NYSPFFA Convention in Corning, NY. Richard L. Yackel is the son of Captain Richard A. Yackel Floating G-1.

American Red Cross Firefighters Challenge

IAFF Local 1071 has partnered with the Rochester Fire Department to take part in the American Red Cross Annual Fire Fighters Challenge.  During the months of July and August, firefighters are challenged to have as many members as possible donate blood at one of the local blood donation centers. Family and friends of RFD members are also able to participate in the challenge.

RFD Promotions

The Rochester Fire Department held a Promotion Ceremony on June 15, 2012 in the Kate Gleason Auditorium at the Bausch & Lomb Building of the Central Library. 

Salvatore Mitrano, III was sworn in as Interim Fire Chief.

Lt. Mark Alberts, Lt. James Hartman and Lt. Joseph Luna,III were promoted to the Rank of Captain.

Firefighter Charles Wright and Firefighter Lawrence Brumfield were promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant.

Congratulations to all six of these men and their families.

Charity Hockey tournament

The Annual Police & Fire Charity Hockey Tournament was held on April 20 – 22, 2012. The money raised was donated directly to Rochester Fire Lieutenant Joe Luna and his family. Lt Luna’s 12 year old daughter, Emily, is fighting a rare blood disorder which will require a Bone Marrow Transplant.  Thank you to all who supported this Hockey Tournament especially the Tournament Coordinators RPD Officer Carlos Alvarado and RFD Firefighter Andy Johnson. The Tournament raised $685. RPD & Greece PD won their divisions.
